The World Agriculture Prize (WAP) was established by the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for the Agricultural and Life Sciences (GCHERA), an organization dedicated to international agricultural education and research.

 

The World Agriculture Prize (WAP) was formally proposed by both Prof. Zhai Huqu, the former-president of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAASS) and Prof. Zhou Guanghong, the President of Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) and Chairman of Education Professional Committee (EPC) of the Chinese Association of Agricultural Science Societies (CAASS) on October 20, 2012 in the occasion of NAU’s 110th anniversary and was approved at the GCHERA steering committee meeting in Uruguay on Oct. 29, 2012.

 

From 2018, the prize is doubled to 100,000 USD and two recipients awarded, with at least one recipient NOT coming from a country classified as having a developed economy. Generously sponsored by the Education Development Foundation of Nanjing Agricultural University and Da Bei Nong Group, the prizes are awarded annually.

 

As the international prize in agricultural higher education, the GCHERA World Agriculture Prize encourages global development of the mission of higher education institutions in education, research and innovation in the agricultural and life sciences by recognizing the distinguished contributions of an individual to this mission. Each year, the GCHERA World Agriculture Prize is awarded to two academics/faculty members from a higher education institution involved in agricultural and life sciences -including, but not limited to- agriculture, forestry, natural resources, food, bio-based products, bio-energy, rural development and the environment.
